Egypt’s ‘development’ means more destruction of historical tombs

The Egyptian government has faced a barrage of criticism over its decision to remove tombs dating back hundreds of years in the Imam al-Shafie, Al Sayyeda Nafisa, and Al Sayeda Aisha districts.

In the late 19th century, the area was designated for the burial of senior state officials and notables. Jusoor Post went to the cemeteries to document them but was told that journalists are not allowed to take photos or speak to the locals. Surveillance cameras were set on the tops of the tombs to prevent reporting on the demolition.
